Animal Population:


In Canada there are 5,104,800 dogs and 7,274,300 cats.

53% of Canadians own an animal as a pet (dog or cat).

30% of Canadian families own a dog.

28% of Canadians own at least one cat.

32% of dog owners also have a cat and 14% own another animal.

54% of Canadians, who own an animal, buys a gift for his or her pet at Christmas time.

On the average, each Canadian household with a domestic animal spends $569.00 per year on the animal.

Do animals disturb?

Two-thirds of Canadians would also like cats to be put on leashes.
This opinion is shared by 72% of people who do not own an animal as a mate and also by 59% of cat owners.

51% of Canadians say pet feces, which have not been collected by owners in public places, disturb them. Lets emphasize that 50% of cat owners and 51% of dog owners share this view.

31% of our fellow citizens are annoyed by the noises of barking dogs, of mewing cats when the animals are not theirs. 32% of cat owners and 28% of dog owners also notes this disturbance.

28% of Canadians complain about animals roaming on their properties. Pet owners also complain to the same extent about intrusion on their properties


Women and Animals:

Most women animal owners (82%) embrace or stroke their pets at least four times a day.

Almost 40% say that they stroke their animal more than ten times a day.

Almost two thirds of respondents (64%) also use a nickname or a flattering term when calling their pet...

Six out of ten say their pet sleeps in their bedroom at night.

Almost one third (31%) celebrate the anniversary of their dog or cat.

Women dog owners celebrate their dog’s anniversary more than those who own a cat do.(39% versus 25%)

Close to one quarter (26%) bring their pet on vacation with them.

Dogs are more likely to be taken on vacation than cats. (47% versus 9%)

Most of the respondents (94%) believe that their animal understands, in part, what they tell them.

Women dog owners are more likely to believe that their dog understands what they tell them than women cat owners (54% versus 34%).

Most of the respondents (69%) are of the opinion that the veterinarian plays an important role in preserving their relationship with their pet.


Animals and affection in Canada:

40% of dog owners hug their animal as a sign of affection.

18% of dog owners say that exercise done regularly with their dog, constitutes the best way of showing their dog affection.

21% of dog owners maintain that their dog understands them better than their spouse or any other key person in their surroundings.

48% of the respondents maintain that the unconditional love their dog gives them, helps them relax.
